Makeover Monday Tableau Challenge: Theft in Japan

Radial Tableau chart

Chart showing the number of reported thefts in Japan in 2012, part of the Makeover Monday data visualization series, run by Andy Kreibel and Andy Cotgreave.

Design inspired by Japanese hand fans like this one. I had some fun with this one and took some liberties to create a piece more in the data-art camp than a serious data visualization.

At heart, it’s a radial bar chart with a background image. I’m indebted to this useful blog post, which showed me how to do all the hard stuff: How-to create radial bar charts from Interworks.

Makeover Monday: Wage growth in English Football leagues

Tableau masters Andy Kriebel and Andy Cotgreave run a weekly data visualization challenge, Makeover Monday, where they invite the Tableau community to partake in creating their own version of a data visual that has been recently published.

Continuing the recent football trend on this blog, the #MakeoverMonday challenge was visualize the increase in professional footballer’s wages in the UK leagues and improve upon the original chart published in the Daily Mail.

Here’s my take:

I stumbled across an interesting Tableau community project recently, called the Tableau Reviz Project, started by Matt Chambers, Nelson Davis and Alex Duke.

The idea is that each month the Reviz founders will select a topic and a dataset, create their own visualizations and then open it up to the public for entries.

The first topic was a difficult, tragic subject: data relating to firearm deaths. The data itself is available for download here from the Reviz project. It is sourced from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
